Anything that can be said about this double CD release can also be said about the roar of a rushing stream or the sound of snow falling on a clear night. These two sound artisans have crafted so perfect an auditory environment that it is completely devoid of artifice or noticeable flaw. It is a field of glass on top of a quiet lake.

Fresh from his spectacular 3" cd-r on Foxglove and another release for A Silent Place, Naples' Fabio Orsi partners here with sound artisan Gianluca Becuzzi. Orsi is another young and unexpected talent coming through the new Italian pipeline. "The Stones Know Everything" is the second release of his sprawling trilogy with Becuzzi (the first CD, "Muddy Speaking Ghosts Through My Machines," appeared on A Silent Place in late 2006). Gianluca has been around for the better part of two decades making music under the monikers Kinetix, Limbo, and others, but his work with wunderkind Orsi opens a new chapter in his impressive body of work.

Crafting something this immense puts these two musicians into the realm of Stars of the Lid, Birchville Cat Motel and Growing, creating several intense worlds of ambient splendor, juxtaposing the sounds of everyday life with jetstreams of microtones and pulses of audible light. And they handle this enormous task with the care and precision of a watchmaker or a surgeon, but also with the ears of an obvious fan of sound.

This album will be certainly followed by other cooperations, considering the big friendly artistic sodality between them. Fabio e Gianluca are a strange duo, considering the big differences of their artistic back-ground. Fabio Orsi is a young and unexpected talent. After his first album, "Osci" (LP, SmallVoices 2005), produced by Gianluca Becuzzi, he got a lot of positive feedbacks, worldwide, by the most important international media, confirmed by his second official release "For Alan Lomax" (CD, A Silent Place 2006) splitted with cosmical Italian duo My Cat is an Alien. Gianluca Becuzzi is a very well known character of the Italian experimental scene since from the 80s, under many different alias. Recently known as Kinetix, Gianluca latest release is the very well appreciated "Memory Makes Noise" (CD, SmallVoices 2006) a great electroacoustic pearl. The unexpected uncounter between different forces, experiences and visions of this two artists is prefectly melted in this album: strong and tied, an imaginary place where folkway and research, past and present, distance and closeness, mud and clouds, ghosts and machines meets. Shreds of ballads, guitars and old keyboards floating on the vibrant surface of this faery river and disappear, towed off by drones and rumors, pouring between distant voices and centenary blues songs from the Alan Lomax archive. "Osci è un buco profondo scavato nel terreno dell'amata-odiata musica tradizionale. Rappresenta la volontà di strappare le radici e osservarle da prospettive insolite, con lenti deformanti sotto luci colorate. Osci non ha niente a che spartire con l'arte, piuttosto somiglia a una zappa. [...] In Osci si parla la lingua dei grilli e delle formiche. Il tempo non esiste."
Nulla meglio di queste parole può spiegare il senso dell'ennesimo lavoro di Fabio Orsi (noto anche come fAB) intitolato "Osci", stavolta uscita ufficiale su vinile per la Small Voices. Allegate al disco tre belle cartoline d'epoca in un bianco e nero sfocato ed etereo, ed è sul retro di queste che troviamo l'introduzione riportata sopra; due lunghe suite di 18 minuti ciascuna, una per facciata, veri e propri collage di sensazioni sonore in cui modernità e tradizione si fondono come plasma sospeso nello spazio, pronto a prendere la tangente dal pianeta Terra per narrare a universi lontani la storia di una cultura particolarissima, quella pugliese, fatta di sagre paesane, feste, canti e balli tradizionali, momenti di spensieratezza e divertimento dunque, ma anche di spiritualità e pace, siano quelle di una casa con tutti i rituali della famiglia che la abita, o quella di una chiesa, con la religione motore e freno al tempo stesso della quotidianità.
Fabio Orsi non fa altro che andare a campionare dal vivo, a catturare frammenti di questa cultura e quindi a inserli in composizioni di pura elettronica ambient, fatta di laptop, chitarre ed altro ancora, rielaborando infine il tutto con tecniche interamente digitali: la modernità dunque, l'altro componente di questa perfetta miscela binaria.
Le due tracce andrebbero in realtà considerate come una suddivisione, forzata dal formato del vinile, di un unico continuum di suono in cui le suggestioni si scavalcano l'un l'altra in una sorta di lento ma perpetuo mutamento: sogna l'ascoltatore, è assente. Si annullano il peso e l'età, "Il tempo non esiste". Ritorna feto nel grembo materno, pronto a rinascere, ai giorni d'oggi, nell'Ottocento, in un futuro inimmaginabile o in un'altra galassia, dopo i trentasei minuti del viaggio cosmico di "Osci".
Fabio Orsi non fallisce un colpo.

Tribute album to ALAN LOMAX, the man who, more than any other, have worked to "bring the music to light", in the widest and most absolute meaning of the word. A record that the space brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio, aka MY CAT IS AN ALIEN, share with FABIO ORSI, considered by the impro duo as the most interesting emerging Italian musician, from the "bloody heart of Naples".

In his track, Orsi inserts lots of voices "stolen" from the infinite recordings made by Lomax along decades of meticulous and continuous work, and makes them hinge and nucleus of "Spring no more and love come in the wind", giving them new shape in order to make them his own; like for example a Sicilian fisherman's chant from the middle of the Twentieth century, which Orsi stretches into a low and hearthbreaking prayer, submitted to the personal and sensitive logic of his own elettroacoustic aesthetics. Though so different from each other, Orsi's and MCIAA's tracks sound complementary, and build up an original, complex and really unitary work. MCIAA's "Heart of the eartH" starts with an harmonica floating throughout cosmic sounds, while alien cosmic blues guitar chords slowly increase until an explosion of tumultuous space-noise, enhanced by Roberto Opalio's estranged vocal tune, which rises on the Great Void to celebrate the spirit of the artists which hav e always represented MCIAA's heroes, from Leadbelly to Blind Lemon Jefferson and Charlie Patton. The listener won't find difficult to see the great Alan Lomax materializing from the deepest Cosmos, as undiscussed discoverer of the American Primitive Music.



[Italian:] Album di tributo ad ALAN LOMAX, colui che più di ogni altro ha operato al fine di "portare alla luce la musica", nel più ampio ad assoluto senso del termine gli si voglia attribuire. Un lavoro che l'improv duo costituito dai fratelli torinesi Maurizio e Roberto Opalio, alias MY CAT IS AN ALIEN, condividono con colui che ritengono il più interessante musicista emergente italiano, FABIO ORSI, dal profondo cuore di Napoli.

Orsi inserisce e fa confluire nel suo brano "Spring no more and love come in the wind", rendendole perno e nucleo, numerose voci "rubate" dalle infinite registrazioni effettuate da Lomax lungo l'arco di decadi di meticoloso e continuo lavoro, e rimodellate da Orsi stesso fino a stravolgerle e farle proprie; come ad esempio il canto di un pescatore siciliano di metà Novecento che Orsi dilata rendendolo preghiera sommessa e commovente, piegata alla logica della propria personalissima e delicata estetica elettroacustica. Sebbene tanto diversi tra loro, i brani di Orsi e dei MCIAA appaiono complementari, costituendo alla fine un'opera originale, complessa, e davvero unitaria. "Heart of the eartH" dei MCIAA inizia con un'armonica fluttuante all'interno di sonorità cosmiche, con arpeggi di straziato alien cosmic blues che si elevano lentamente fino ad esplodere in un tumulto space-noise, caratterizzato dalla straniata melodia vocale di Roberto Opalio, che si erge sul Grande Vuoto per celebrare lo spirito degli artisti che da sempre rappresentano gli eroi dei MCIAA, da Leadbelly a Blind Lemon Jefferson e Charlie Patton. L'ascoltatore più attento non farà certo fatica a veder materializzarsi, dal più profondo del cosmo, il grande Alan Lomax, scopritore indiscusso dell' American Primitive Music.
